Rosacea Awareness Month
April is designated as Rosacea Awareness Month by The National Rosacea Society (NRS) with the aim of raising awareness and educating on the impact of this widespread skin condition. Rosacea affects 1 in 10 people in the UK and is most common amongst the middle-aged population.
What is Rosacea “ the Causes and Symptoms?
A 'rosy' complexion or 'healthy glow' might be seen as an enviable trait to those of us with pale, dull or lacklustre complexions, but Rosacea is far more than just flushed cheeks and an 'outdoor glow'. Symptoms of Rosacea range from recurrent blushing, to permanent red skin with broken veins, to acne-like eruptions of pustules and lumps. When dealing with Rosacea, it is more about managing the condition rather than finding a 'cure'. Although there is no known cause of Rosacea, symptoms can be triggered by a variety of factors such as exposure to sunlight, stress, weather conditions and certain types of food or drinks. It is important to try and find the triggers of each individual's Rosacea symptoms, keeping a food diary is recommended.Who Can Rosacea Affect?
Unfortunately for our female readers and patients, Rosacea is most likely to affect women. Although less common, men can also suffer with this skin condition and tends to cause more severe symptoms. Rhinophyma affects the nose, where nasal skin thickens and becomes deep purplish-red in colour. This appears to make the nose appear larger and sometimes looks deformed. This skin thickening can also occur on the cheek, chin and forehead.Treatment Options
There are several treatments that will help with the symptoms of Rosacea. We normally recommend a combination of skin treatments to treat the specific symptoms of Rosacea.IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy is commonly used for the treatment of flushing, thread veins, broken capillaries, sun spots and bloodspots. IPL effectively removes dilated capillaries by coagulating the blood in the tiny vessels. The vessels then collapse and disappear. A large problem with Rosacea sufferers is the prominent broken capillaries that add to the diffused redness. This treatment can improve skin's cosmetic appearance whilst stimulating collagen production to promote healthy skin growth.Topical Products
